Notes
- If your server is hosted by RWS, then you will not be able to update the server yourself. Please log a case with RWS Support who will forward your request to the RWS Cloud Operations team
- If you are using Trados GroupShare Cloud then you will not be able to update as you are using a shared server.
- RWS is not responsible for data loss. It is your responsibility to take full backups of your server(s) before you begin and to implement a suitable backup strategy.
- If your web server (IIS Server) is separate from your Trados GroupShare application server then please log a case with RWS Support who will be able to assist you further.
- This only applies to installing Cumulative Updates for a version of Trados GroupShare that has already been installed by RWS Professional Services or an authorized reseller.
- Upgrades performed on your own from Trados GroupShare 2015 (or earlier), or upgrading from any version of Trados GroupShare 2017 (non-SR1) to Trados GroupShare 2017 SR1 / Trados GroupShare 2020 are not supported.
- If you would like to arrange an upgrade then please speak to your RWS sales contact or an RWS Authorised Reseller who will be happy to help you with this.
- This guide assumes that Trados GroupShare is installed in its default location on drive C: of the Trados GroupShare application server. If it is not then please adjust the instructions accordingly.
Before you start
- Take a full backup of your Trados GroupShare application server.
- Take a full backup of your SQL Server or all of its databases.
- Install all Windows Updates on the Trados GroupShare application server; continue to check for, and install, updates until the server is completely up to date.
- Ensure you have enough free space on the system drive of your Trados GroupShare application server (and the drive Trados GroupShare is installed on if it is on a different drive)
- Inform users that during the update process resources (server-based translation memories and termbases) from the Trados GroupShare server will not be available. Using projects or server-based resources during an update/ upgrade process of Trados GroupShare can lead to data corruption. We recommend performing such actions outside your business hours!
- Find the latest Instalation Protocol provided by RWS Professional Services for your environment, read it and keep it at hand for reference during installation. Following the steps in the installation protocol ensures a smooth installation.
!NOTE! If you are updating
Trados GroupShare 2020 SR1 from a cumulative update
PRIOR to
CU5 you will have to upgrade your
SQL Server instance to a version higher than
SQL Server 2016. Please review the
Trados GroupShare 2020 SR1 CU5 release notes for details (
Dropped support for SQL Server 2016).
Install the Cumulative Update
1. Log into your server as the
Trados GroupShare Service User. This is the Windows user that
Trados GroupShare uses to run its services. If you are unsure which user this is then open the
Trados GroupShare 20XX Console and go to
Console Root ->
Trados GroupShare ->
Services. If you do not log in as this user, and the user you run the update as does not have sufficient permissions to upgrade the SQL databases, then the update will fail. Remember that just because a user is an
Administrator in Windows does not mean it has
sysadmin permissions in SQL Server.
2. Copy the following file to your Windows
Desktop:
C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Server\Platform\
web.config !NOTE! While installing
Trados GroupShare 2020 SR1 CU6 and higher (CU6, CU7, CU8, CU8.1, CU9), the
web.config file contains additional code lines for each iteration, and it needs to be adjusted after the installation of the new version. Simply copying the
web.config file from a previous
installation will cause connectivity issues while trying to connect to
Trados GroupShare 2020 via
Trados Studio. A simple solution is to download the needed
HTTP/
HTTPS web.config template
file from
this article (
Attachments section -
WebConfigs_for_GroupShare_2020_CUX.zip) and paste it over the
web.config file that is created during the
installation.
3. Download the latest Cumulative Update of
Trados GroupShare from your
RWS Account. Go to
Products & Plans ->
DOWNLOADS ->
FILTER BY ->
Trados GroupShare 2017 SR1 or 2020.
4. Run the installer you downloaded in step 3. In most cases you should just be able to accept the defaults for each step of the wizard, having double-checked the information is correct. Be aware that you may be asked to enter the
Trados GroupShare Service User password, depending on which version you are updating from. If you are prompted to restart the server then make sure you do; failure to do so will cause the update process to fail.
5. Rename the
C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Server\Platform\web.config file to
web.config.old6. Copy the
web.config from your
Desktop (from step 2) to
C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Server\Platform\ or from
this article if installing
Trados GroupShare 2020 SR1 CU6 or higher (CU6, CU7, CU8, CU8.1, CU9).
7. Go to the
Trados GroupShare 20XX Console and then to
Console Root ->
Trados GroupShare ->
Services and make sure all of the services are started. If they are not then go to the
Services (Local) under
Console Root and start them manually.
8. If you are using
MultiTerm Online you will need to re-deploy it. Please refer to the steps provided in the
GroupShare Installation Protocol at page 64.
