Accessing GroupShare web interface in Mozilla Firefox/Google Chrome continuously prompts to install MS Silverlight

Scope/Environment

Google Chrome (version 45 and newer)

Symptoms/Context

You access the GroupShare web interface in Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. Instead of the SDL Studio GroupShare login site the following is displayed:

To view this content, please install
Microsoft Silverlight
Click now to install

After downloading and trying to open the site again you see the same behavior .

Resolution

Workaround: Use browser that supports Microsoft Silverlight

To access the web interface for GroupShare 2014/2015, use a browser that support Microsoft Silverlight. At the time of the writing of this article e.g. the most recent version the the following browsers support Microsoft Silverlight:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox Extended Support Release.
Add to Google Chrome the IE Tab extension that will emulate Internet Explorer.

Solution: Upgrade to SDL GroupShare 2017

For SDL Trados GroupShare 2017, the Microsoft Silverlight-based web interface has been replaced with a new modern and fast version that works on all major modern browsers. This means that the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in is no longer required to access the GroupShare web interface.

For customers hosting their own GroupShare instance: Please contact your sales representative for an offer to GroupShare upgrade offer.

For customers hosted by SDL: Contact SDL Support to request when an upgrade to GroupShare 2017 can be made:

Log in to the SDL Gateway with your SDL Account.
Click on the blue Log a Case button.

Root Cause

The SDL Studio GroupShare WebUI and SDL WorldServer website is using the embedded content type Microsoft Silverlight to display the GroupShare WebUI. The embedded content type Microsoft Silverlight (similiar such as Adobe Flash and Java applets) are displayed in most browsers via NPAPI.
As of version 52 of the web browser Mozilla has deactivated the so-called NPAPI Plugin feature that is allowing content types to be viewed in the browser, in this specific case the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in for viewing the SDL Studio GroupShare web interface. The same is true for Google Chrome since version 45.

A solution to this issue has been provided by SDL in GroupShare 2017. For SDL Trados GroupShare 2017, the Microsoft Silverlight-based web interface has been replaced with a new modern and fast version. This means that the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in is no longer required to access the GroupShare web interface.
