Cumulative Update 8 for Trados Studio 2021 SR1 (Build 16.1.8.4404, released on 5 July 2021)
This CU fixes the following issue that may occur when opening WorldServer packages: "Could not find a part of the path <Path>" where Path refers to a folder on your computer. Such WorldServer packages cannot be processed in the previously released CU7.
Known issue
In this release, it is not possible to open WorldServer packages through a double-click in Windows Explorer. We will address this issue in the next update. To open WorldServer packages, use the Open WorldServer Package button in Projects view with the WorldServer app installed.
Important note for App users (WorldServer Compatibility Pack and Trados Compatibility and Migration Power Pack
The WorldServer Compatibility Pack and the Trados Compatibility and Migration Power Pack have been updated to provide full compatibility with CU8 and CU7; they do not work with earlier CUs (CU6 and earlier). As a consequence, it is important that you use the integrated AppStore in Trados Studio to download these apps only once you have this CU installed (Trados Studio SR1 CU8).
For Studio 2021 CU6 and earlier, you must download and continue using the correct version of the app from the AppStore on the web. At the time of writing, these apps are available from the links below:
Cumulative Update 7 for Trados Studio 2021 SR1 (Build 16.1.7.4397, released on 1 July 2021)
Enhancements
Enhanced package creation for large files
If you’re creating packages with files that are too large to be embedded in the .SDLXLIFF file, Trados Studio will now automatically add these to the package as separate dependency files. Previously, files that exceeded your specified maximum embedded size were only referenced as a link inside the .SDLXLIFF files. This led to “Dependency file not found” messages when opening such packages, or when previewing or exporting the target file because referenced files could not be recreated from the .SDLXLIFF link.
More efficient lookups in server TMs during batch tasks
Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU7 increases the number of translation units (TUs) in the batches sent to the GroupShare server during batch task processing. Instead of 10 TUs/batch, Trados Studio now sends batches of 200 TUs/batch for more a more efficient lookup process on server TMs in certain scenarios.
You can customize this default batch size according to the capabilities of your Trados GroupShare server. While larger TU batches means fewer calls to the server and faster performance, older Trados GroupShare servers may time out trying to process too many TUs in a single batch. For information on setting the right TU batch size for your TM server, see Increase TU batch size for faster TM searches during batch tasks.
Faster processing of large DITA projects
Trados Studio can now process new projects that contain large numbers of XML2 Oasis DITA files more efficiently. (CRQ-16369)
Improved processing of cloud files with embedded content
As part of continually improving our cloud functionality, we have optimized the file type processing with files containing embedded content. To ensure you can work with such content as best as possible and avoid any potential issues, we recommend that you update Trados Studio to this cumulative update as soon as possible. Trados Studio versions older than Cumulative Update 5 may not be able to work with such files in all scenarios, such as saving files in the target format.
Support for custom cost bands in cloud projects with pricing models
The Language Cloud Translation Management offering has recently introduced support for custom cost bands. To support this enhancement, Trados Studio has extended its cloud compatibility to enable you to seamlessly create, open and work with cloud projects that use custom pricing models with custom fuzzy bands. The Work in Progress batch tasks as well as the Analysis Statistics view part may not yet fully reflect the custom bands changes in all scenarios. These will be updated with a future Trados Studio release.
RWS rebranding
We have started rebranding Trados Studio to reflect the integration of SDL into the RWS Group. This updates the user interface with a new logo and a set of colors that is more accessibility compliant than the previous set. Additionally, you will find Trados Studio instead of SDL Trados Studio in the Windows Start menu. Other than that, all the Trados Studio functionality that you know and love remains unchanged. Also, the Help About command is still called "About SDL Trados Studio" for compatibility reasons with other products in the Trados portfolio.
SDL Machine Translation soon to become Language Weaver
With the next Trados Studio updates, the old SDL Machine Translation branding will be updated to Language Weaver. The rebranding does not impact the machine translation services that you can access from Trados Studio.
Important Note for App Users (WorldServer Compatibility Pack and Trados Compatibility and Migration Power Pack)
Important note for users of the apps "WorldServer Compatibility Pack" and "Trados Compatibility and Migration Power Pack": these apps have been updated to provide full compatibility with this CU; they do not work with earlier CUs. As a consequence, it is important that you use the integrated appstore in Studio to download these apps only once you have this CU installed (Trados Studio SR1 CU7). For earlier versions of Studio 2021 you must download and continue using the correct version of the app from the appstore on the web. At the time of writing, the WorldServer Compatibility Pack is available from https://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/worldserver-compatibility-pack-for-sdl-trados-studio/1102/ and the Trados Compatibility and Migration Power Pack is available from https://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/sdl-trados-compatibility-and-migration-power-pack/1101/.

Cumulative Update 6 for SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 (Build 16.1.6.4276, released on 18 May 2021)
This CU fixes the following issue that may occur when connecting to server-based resources on Trados GroupShare via Auth0 authentication: Error: Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.SHDocVw, Version=1.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=db7cfd3acb5ad44e' or one of its dependencies.
Cumulative Update 5 for SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 (Build 16.1.5.4270, released on 27 April 2021)
SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 Cumulative Update 5 includes the following fixes and enhancements:
Enhancements
Option to add NMT dictionaries (glossaries) for Machine Translation
Neural-machine translation (NMT) dictionaries, called glossaries in the Trados Studio and Trados Live user interface and in this KB article, are now also available when connecting to Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models via machine translation. Previously, you could only specify glossaries when using NMT models as part of a Translation Engine. Glossaries enhance NMT models to provide smarter automatic translations based on your own terminology. The glossaries and NMT models available in Trados Studio depend on the SDL Machine Translation Cloud subscription that you linked to your cloud account. They are created and maintained in paid Machine Translation Cloud subscriptions and are not available in the free NMT quota that is available for all Trados Studio users.
To add glossaries for NMT models when connecting to machine translation go to Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memories and Automated Translation > Use > SDL Language Cloud and select Machine Translation from the drop-down menu. The new Add glossaries option is available next to each NMT model for which glossaries are available on your SDL Machine Translation Cloud account.
Support for custom cloud workflows
The Language Cloud Translation Management offering has recently introduced support for working with custom cloud workflows. To support this enhancement, Trados Studio has extended its cloud compatibility to enable you to seamlessly create and open cloud projects that use custom cloud workflows, templates and tasks in Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU5 and later.
Previous Trados Studio versions with cloud integration also support custom workflows (Trados Studio 2019 and previous 2021 releases). However, these older Trados Studio versions do not show the name of custom tasks. Instead, task names are mapped to standard task types available in these previous Trados Studio versions. For more information, see Custom workflow tasks in cloud packages are displayed as "Translation" or "Review" tasks.
Improved support for cloud projects created from .ZIP files
Trados Studio has recently added support for downloading cloud projects that were created from .ZIP files originally. Trados Studio will also now fully respect the folder structure from the online project when interacting with it from Trados Studio.
Improved usability in the New Translation Memory window
When creating new local translation memories, you can now add the source and target languages using ISO codes. In addition to typing the language name to see its language variants or scrolling through the long list of available languages, simply type in the language code and select the corresponding language. For example: EN-US for English (United States) or FR-CA for French (Canadian).
The ISO codes are based on the Windows list of Language Code Identifiers.
As a consequence, it is important that you use the integrated appstore in Studio to download these apps only once you have this CU installed (Trados Studio SR1 CU5).
Performance improvements
Faster batch tasks and project creation with documents containing locked segments
The Analyze Files batch task now runs faster when locked segments are excluded from the analysis. (CRQ-22982). Since Analyze Files is part of most default task sequences during project creation, this enables Trados Studio to create new projects approximately three times faster with documents containing many locked segments. This improvement applies to new projects with such files for which you have enabled the Exclude locked segments from analysis on the Create a New Project > Batch Tasks page.
In addition, locked segments are now also ignored during the Pre-translate and Populate Project Translation Memories batch tasks. Apart from improving processing times, this change also ensures that locked segments are not overwritten with new translations when running these batch tasks.
Faster project package import
Trados Studio can now open large project packages approximately 20% faster.
Robustness improvements
Improved handling of projects that exceed the 260 characters limit
Trados Studio now notifies you to change the download location of cloud projects or cloud project files that cannot be downloaded because a file path would exceed the Windows path length limit
Improved Users email validation
Trados Studio runs better checks on the syntax of your user emails under File > Setup > Users. This ensures that you are working with an accurate list of users to send packages to/receive packages from.
This improvement is not compatible with Outlook data migrated from previous Trados Studio versions. After upgrading to CU5, be sure to update any existing Outlook contacts. For more information, see Invalid user emails after upgrade.
Fixed issues
General
- Fixed Last Modified field to ensure it always reflects the date when the last changes were made to project files. (CRQ-14467)
- When creating a new project using PerfectMatch, the Matching Previous Documents from Folder option could only be applied to each language individually. This issue is now fixed so that all the relevant PerfectMatch files in the folder can automatically be mapped to the available project languages. (CRQ-21516)
- Fixed „Error: Sequence contains no elements” that occurred when trying to open a file with comments scope set to Current File. (CRQ-16872)
- Improved the error message displayed when opening invalid projects with TQA settings in the Trados Studio Freelance version. (CRQ-12854)
- The Automatic Updates options under File > Options are now grayed out if the option to check for Trados Studio updates has already been disabled through Microsoft Group Policy Editor. (CRQ-10231)
- Addressed errors that occurred when trying to open physically or virtually merged .SDLXLIFF files without file type information: „An unexpected error occurred while activating the document view”, „The path is not of legal form is shown”, "Object reference not set to an instance of an object", "Check Out Required - To modify this document, you must check it out."
.SDLXLIFF files without file type information are files generated by alignment, or by the Analyze Files task when the Export Unknown Segments or Export Frequent segments options are used. Since such files cannot be merged, Trados Studio now notifies you to open such files individually instead. (CRQ-10014)
- When working with files in right-to-left (RTL) languages and enabling the option to Show Formatting Tags, the Editor was sometimes displaying words as a group of distinct characters. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-23404)
- Fixed issue that was causing Trados Studio to jumble words in the Editor. This issue occurred when working with Office source files that contained both RTL and LTR languages and for which the language direction was not specified. (CRQ-23517)
- Disabled keyboard shortcut F2: Edit Term Entry when using the Default Layout in the Termbase Viewer window. Since the Default Layout already offers direct access to Edit Term Mode, this keyboard shortcut was redundant. (CRQ-10609)
- Translation memories added to specific language pair level were not included when creating new project packages. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-20368)
- Recognized terms containing '< character >' now show up correctly in the Term Recognition window. (CRQ-9757)
- Improved the error messages displayed when trying to save alignment results to an invalid network path. (CRQ-5169)
- Fixed issues related to TM lookup on segments with accepted or rejected tracked changes. (CRQ-5481)
GroupShare projects and TMs
- Fixed "An error has occurred while using the Translation Provider TMName: One or more errors occurred". This issue occurred when using a server-based TM with multiple filter penalties for the same TM field. (CRQ-13853)
- Fixed error that was occurring when translating using a GroupShare TM with a TM penalty above 20%. (CRQ-19696)
Previously, Trados Studio accepted TM penalties of up to 25%. This conflicted with the limit imposed by GroupShare and cloud TMs, for which the TM penalty was capped at 20%. Trados Studio has now also raised the TM penalty limit to 20%, to align with the requirements of cloud and server-based TMs. When projects are opened in Trados Studio, any TM penalty values over the new maximum will be set to 20%.
- Fixed „Error: Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'proj.SettingsBundle” that occurred when trying to republish a previously unpublished GroupShare project. (CRQ-22275)
- Fixed incorrect behavior of Change Field Value option for server-based TMs. Batch editing translation units to add new field values was incorrectly replacing existing values instead of adding additional ones. (CRQ-14441)
- Trados Studio no longer loses connection to server-based translation memories (TMs) after 12 hours of editor inactivity. Instead, the GroupShare token is now automatically renewed for Windows and SDL authentication. For SSO authentication, you are prompted to log back in, without having to reconnect again to the GroupShare server. (CRQ-10873,CRQ-21164)
. - Trados Studio now automatically removes trailing and leading spaces from field values text in server-based TMs. This prevents errors when running batch tasks. (CRQ-9569)
- Fixed issue related to penalties not being applied to server-based AnyTM translation memories. (CRQ-15949)
AutoCorrect
- Fixed an issue with imported AutoCorrect settings not being saved and applied. (CRQ-23445)
- The option to Replace straight quotes with smart quotes now works as expected. (LG-28442)
In addition, replacing quotes near tags no longer impacts quotes in proximity. (CRQ-23453)
- Replace-text-as-you type is no longer incorrectly triggered when typing slowly. (CRQ-23290)
Batch Tasks
- The Analyze Files batch task no longer ignores variables available in the variable list of a TM. This ensures that repetitions are correctly detected and reported in the Analyze Files report. (CRQ-9040)
- Fixed "Error: Index was outside the bounds of the array" error when running the Analyze Files batch task on Word files with rejected tracked changes. (CRQ-17881).
This fix also updates how Analyze Files handles rejected segments when you run this batch task on its own. To match its behavior during task sequences, rejected segments are now always accounted for in the Analyze Files report, and also displayed for TM lookup in the Editor view.
- Fixed an issue that was slowing down the Analyze and Pre-Translate Files tasks when the Match Repair option was enabled for batch tasks usage. (CRQ-23152)
- Improved error handling for files that contain segments merged over paragraphs. Trados Studio warns you if your files contain such segments as soon as you try to export the files for bilingual review. Since bilingual review is not designed to work with segments merged over paragraphs, you are notified to manually apply any review changes available for these segments, before running the Update files from bilingual review batch task. (CRQ-22247)
- The Update Main Translation Memories batch task no longer ignores TMs that you enable right before running the task. Previously, if you activated the Update TM option in the project’s settings or in the Update Main Translation Memories wizard, the recently enabled TM was automatically deactivated while running the batch task. As a result, the TM could not be updated with the translation units from the selected project files. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-17188)
- Fixed an issue with the Pseudo-translate Files task not placing Spanish text in the target segments. (CRQ-16514)
- Fixed "Unspecified error" that occurred when running the Update Project Translation Memories batch task with the Keep most recent translation units option enabled. (CRQ-11819)
Verification
- Fixed an issue where editing the Verification settings for Terminology Verifier in a project template updated other project templates in the list with the same values. (CRQ-16636)
- Fixed false positives QA Checker results for certain Regex rules. (CRQ-22449, CRQ-20788)
- QA Checker no longer incorrectly reports tag content inside locked selections of a segment. (CRQ-16272)
To ensure that meta tag content is always ignored during QA checks, locked segment selections are now also excluded from QA checking. Previously, only entire segments could be excluded from QA checking if the Exclude Lockedsegments option was enabled under Project Settings > Verification > QA Checker > Segments to exclude. Starting with this CU, QA Checker no longer looks inside locked selections of a segment either. Locked selections are always ignored during QA checks, regardless if the Exclude Locked segments option is disabled.
- QA Checker now reports missing translations even if the segments contain only empty tags. (CRQ-13360)
Licensing
- Fixed “Object Reference” error message incorrectly claiming that “The license key is not valid for this device”. This issue occurred when trying to activate Trados Studio with a cloud subscription on a hard drive that includes spaces in the serial number. This issue may have checked out and locked a subscription license seat on the device. To release the hanging license, go to your cloud account in a browser > Manage Account > Connected Devices tab and delete the inactive devices. (CRQ-22658)
- Restarting Trados Studio removed standard local projects from the Projects list when using a cloud subscription on a computer that was not part of a domain network. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-23317)
Cloud projects
- Fixed issue that was corrupting cloud files when completing Translation tasks in Trados Studio after using the Replace File option in the Engineering task. (CRQ-21723)
File Type and Core Components changes
General
- Optimized the way translation units from merged context matches are added to server-based translation memories. (LCC-11197)

Cumulative Update 4 for SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 (Build 16.1.4.4184, released on 3 March 2021)
SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 Cumulative Update 4 includes the following fixes and enhancements:
Enhancements
- Create cloud projects from pre-translated .SDLXLIFFs
Following the recently added support for .SDLXLIFF files in Language Cloud, Trados Studio now also enables you to use .SDLXLIFFs as source files for your cloud projects.
This enhancement also makes it possible for you to use pre-translated SDLXLIFF files from existing local projects or project packages in cloud projects. You may want to do this if you have pre-translated .SDLXLIFF files that you want to review and finalize in a cloud workflow or simply store on your cloud account. For instance, converting pre-processed .SDLXLIFFs to cloud projects can be useful for accessing the extended review capabilities available in the Online Editor.
Working with .SDLXLIFFs as source files has some by-design limitations whenever a native file is required during verification or in the Generate Target Translation (cloud projects) batch task. This is because these options require access to the original native source file under certain circumstances. For generating the translated target file in the original format, use the Export Files batch task with the "Native Target Files" option instead.
For more information, see
Move .SDLXLIFF files to the cloud in the
online Help.
- Cloud projects now support .ZIP archives
In the Language Cloud Translation Management offering, we recently introduced support for cloud projects that are created using compressed project files (.ZIP files). This option is available for cloud accounts with access to the Customer Portal.
To support this enhancement, we have added the required infrastructure to enable you to download such cloud projects from Trados Studio as well. Currently, the folder hierarchy of the .ZIP file is converted to a flat structure in the Files view. In addition, projects that include more than one file with the same name in the .ZIP folder cannot be downloaded in Trados Studio. These two limitations will be solved with a future Trados Studio cumulative update.
- Full support for custom placeables in cloud TMs
The Studio 2021 release has introduced support for customizing the formats of placeables in local and server-based TMs. Placeables, also called recognized tokens, are patterns that Trados Studio identifies as dates, times, numbers, measurements or currency amounts. With this CU, we extend this support to also cover cloud TMs. This means that Trados Studio now also identifies and auto-localizes placeables in cloud TMs according to the custom formats available in the Language Processing Rule of the TM.
- Option to release cloud task from Trados Studio
If you are on Trados Live Essential, released tasks are automatically reassigned to you, as you are the only user in your cloud account.
In other flows (within the context of Trados Live Team or translation Management), if you change your mind about working on a cloud project task that you have accepted, you can release it to set its status back to Pending and make it available to the default assignees. This option was previously available only from a browser, but you can now also find it in Trados Studio under Files view > Home tab > Cloud Projects group > Release Task.
- Option to download multiple cloud projects at the same time
You can now simultaneously download a selection of projects available on your cloud account. After selecting the cloud projects in the Projects view, click the Download Cloud Projects option from the Home tab, or from the context menu. This makes all the selected projects available locally so that you can work with them from Trados Studio.
- New filter for custom type projects
The Projects view includes a new dynamic filter that refines the list of projects to show only projects created in third-party applications. For each type of third-party project available in the list, the Type drop-down is populated with a corresponding filtering option. For example LingoTek Projects, MultiTrans projects. To work with such projects in Trados Studio, first install the relevant plug-in from the Add-ins tab > SDL AppStore. Offline cloud project packages and TMS packages are considered standard projects. Currently, custom projects are also filtered under the Standard projects filter so you can find them easily without having to first select the corresponding filter.
- Allow source editing for cloud projects files
You can now update the source text for cloud projects that you create from Trados Studio. Updating the source text segments for cloud projects was previously only possible for projects created from a browser. This CU enhances the New Cloud Project wizard with an option to Allow source editing.
- Language Cloud Terminology is now Trados Live Terminology
We have rebranded our online terminology management solution to better align it with our other Trados Live cloud offerings. When working from your browser, you will now see references to the new name in the online user interface. In Studio, we are now referring to adding cloud-based terminology to local projects more generically without making references to the new brand name. Existing terminology subscriptions remain valid and are not impacted by this name change.
Fixed Issues
- Trados Studio stopped responding when opening offline cloud packages with custom file type settings. This issue was fixed by mapping the custom file type to the default file types available in Trados Studio. With this fix, you can now open and work with the project files in the Editor view according to the specifications of the custom file type.
However, the custom file type is not actually transferred into Trados Studio. This prevents you from saving the target files as a different file type. A future fix is planned to enable Trados Studio to completely recreate the custom file types from offline cloud packages.
In the meantime, if you need to copy custom file types from cloud packages into Trados Studio, use the Apply Project Template app from the SDL AppStore. Make sure to set the "File Types" option to "Overwrite”. (CRQ-21361)
