"The translation memory data file is corrupt" error message appears when trying to open a TM in Trados Studio

Symptoms/Context
The translation memory data file is corrupterror message is displayed when trying to open a Translation Memory (TM) in Trados Studio.
You may also receive the message: The translation memory xx could not be opened and has been disabled
Resolution
Download and install the SDLTM Repair tool (https://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/sdltm-repair/298/) from the SDL AppStore in order to try and repair the Translation Memory.
This error may also be caused by a corrupted TranslationMemoryRepository.xml (the file listing all translation memories in the Translation Memories view). Please see the following article for further details: https://gateway.sdl.com/apex/communityknowledge?articleName=000008381
Root Cause
There are a number of things that can cause a TM to become unusable (corrupted). Here are a couple of possible causes:
- the TM is located on OneDrive, DropBox (or other sharing platform) which does not have a stable connection with Studio - we do not recommend storing projects in progress/TMs or termbases in use on external hard drives either. These should only be used to back up data - transferring the TM repeatedly from one location to another and not allowing the transfer to fully complete - another application on the computer (antivirus- or anti-malware software, backup software, etc.) is accessing the TMs while these are in use
