Troubleshooting slow performance or startup problems in Trados Studio and MultiTerm

000001432 |6/10/2022 2:33 PM
Scope/Environment
Trados Studio 2011, MultiTerm 2011 (9.x), Trados Studio 2014, MultiTerm 2014, Trados Studio 2015, MultiTerm 2015, Trados Studio 2017, MultiTerm 2017, Trados Studio 2019, MultiTerm 2019, Trados Studio 2021, MultiTerm 2021, Trados Studio 2022, MultiTerm 2022
Symptoms/Context

Trados Studio and MultiTerm may exhibit the following performance issues in certain circumstances:

  • Very slow to open documents or reference translation memories.
  • Very slow to function or hanging for long periods of time, often displaying the “Not Responding” notification.
  • Failing to open at all. For example:
    • Troubleshooting slow performance in SDL Trados Studio and MultiTerm
    • SDL Trados Studio 2011 shows slow performance when running a Linux-based NAS file system
    • SDL Trados Studio not starting because of F-Secure Antivirus program
    • MultiTerm / Trados Studio does not open after clicking on its icon
    • Trados Studio does not start
  • Failing to load files with extensions related to Trados Studio and MultiTerm. For example:
    • Opening package results in error: An error occurred extracting the package. Cannot find central directory
Resolution

Solution 1: Reinstall Trados Studio / MultiTerm

  1. Deactivate the currently used security suite on your PC.
  2. Reinstall Trados Studio and/or MultiTerm Desktop

If you do not encounter slow performance issues, activate your Antivirus/Firewall suite software again.
After the (re-)installation (without turning on your Antivirus/Firewall suite or UAC), check if you still have performance issues in Trados Studio or  MultiTerm.

If this not helps, please go ahead with Solution 2.

Solution 2: Add exceptions to the security suite

Add exceptions for file type extensions to your antivirus program:

  • *.bpm
  • *.etw
  • *.iix
  • *.itd
  • *.iof
  • *.ix
  • *.kd
  • *.mdf
  • *.mtf
  • *.mwf
  • *.sdlftsettings
  • *.sdlfiletype
  • *.sdlppx
  • *.sdlprofile
  • *.sdlproj
  • *.sdlqasettings
  • *.sdlrpx
  • *.sdltb
  • *.ldb
  • *.sdltm
  • *.sdltm.batchedit
  • *.sdltm.filters
  • *.sdltm.resource
  • *.sdltm.journal
  • *.sdltpl
  • *.sdlxliff
  • *.stppk
  • *.strpk
  • *.tmw
  • *.tmx
  • *.ttp
  • *.ttx
  • *.wsxz
  • *.xdi
  • *.xdl
  • *.xdm
  • *.xdt
  • *.xdx

Add exceptions for the application executable to your security suite:

  • SDLTradosStudio.exe
  • MultiTerm.exe
  • MultiTerm Administrator.exe
  • MultiTerm Convert.exe
  • MultiTerm Extract.exe
  • MultiTerm Widget.exe

Best practice to start:

  1. Disable the User Account Control (if not already disabled)

    • How to disable User Account Control for Windows 7
    • How to disable User Account Control for Windows 8
  2. Deactivate your antivirus suite software.
NOTE: If this Antivirus or Firewall suite is the only protection you have, you should disconnect from the Internet for as long it is not activated again.
  3. Uninstall Trados Studio / MultiTerm (if installed)
  4. Restart your PC.
  5. Install Trados Studio / MultiTerm.

After enabling your AntiVirus/Firewall suite again, add an exception for the products' relevant folders and file types:

  1. These are the locations of folders that are created during the installation (depending whether your operating system is 32bit or 64bit) of Trados Studio and MultiTerm.
  2. All subfolders of the listed folders need to be included in the exception/exclusion list for your antivirus.
  3. Any folder you created for e.g. saving projects or termbases that is not listed here, also needs to be included in the exception list for your antivirus.
  • For Windows Vista/7/8/10:
    • C:\Users\All Users\SDL
    • C:\Users\%Username%\Documents\SDL Trados Studio
    • C:\Users\[USER_NAME]\Documents\SDL
    • C:\Users\[USER_NAME]\Documents\Trados

    • C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\My Documents\AppData\Roaming\SDL
    • C:\Program Files\SDL
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\SDL\
Root Cause
One reason for these symptoms, which are commonly experienced by translators not working in a corporate environment, is the usage of antivirus programs interfering with the installation. If these antivirus applications were turned off during the installation, you will probably turn them on and after activating your antivirus again, find that the active process slows down the performance of the Trados Studio and MultiTerm applications.
