You are translating a document in Trados Studio and you cannot merge two subsequent segments. You select the segments that you want to merge by holding down the [Ctrl] key and clicking on the segment number column (first column). However, when you right-click, the Merge Segments command is not available in the short menu:You can only merge neighboring segments within the same paragraph. This means that you cannot merge:
This is intended behavior. The capital letter P displayed to the right of the target segment in the document structure column (last column), indicates a new paragraph. So if you see the letter P to the right of both segments, you cannot merge them because they belong to different paragraphs: Effects on translation memory leverage when merging and/or splitting segments: Segmentation rules are based on a set of fixed rules that do not always segment in a way that makes sense. Therefore, to correct the segmentation, you may need to merge or split a segment. However, changing how a document is segmented by splitting and merging segments may affect the matches produced from translation memory because the segmentation in the translation memory may become different from the segmentation in the document. |

For XML documents, you can only merge segments as long the content/text resides within the same element. For example the content of the XML file below:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <root> <Element1>This. Is a sentence which can be merged because it's from the same element.</Element1> <Element2>This is a sentence</Element2> <Element3>that cannot be merged</Element3> <Element4>because it's spread through multiple elements.</Element4> </root> In SDL Trados Studio it would look like this:
