Symptoms/Context
When opening a PDF file in Trados Studio 2022, I receive the error:

The conversion was not successful. '', hexadecimal value 0xFFFE, is an invalid character.

I do not receive the same error in earlier versions of Trados Studio.

Resolution

Workaround: Convert the PDF file to a Word DOCX file manually using Microsoft Word.

1- Open Microsoft Word
2- Go to Open and browse to the folder where the PDF file is stored
3- Select the PDF file and click Open
4- You will see this message from Word:

5- Click OK. Your PDF file will be converted to a Word DOCX file
6- Review the Word DOCX file comparing it with the PDF file. If you are satisfied with the result, open the Word DOCX file in Trados Studio 2022 and translate it.

Root Cause
Starting from Trados Studio 2022, a new third-party library has been associated with the PDF File Type, which converts PDF files to DOCX files in Trados Studio. You can find more information in this article: PDF Assistant for Trados Studio 2022. As mentioned in the article, support for scanned PDF documents using OCR (optical character recognition) is limited out of the box. If a PDF file contains merely a scanned picture of the underlying document, then the new technology will not be able to convert the document. If, on the other hand, the document is scanned but the text in it is selectable, then the technology will attempt to convert the characters within the document. You can test this in Adobe Reader, for example. If it's possible to select any text in the document, then the technology will attempt to convert it.

The error happens with a PDF file that has been created by an OCR document. However, despite the source PDF file quality, the error should not happen. We have filed a defect for this: CRQ-37167.
