Question
I have received a *.po file for translation. Are Portable Object files supported in WorldServer?
Answer
Yes, Portable Object (*.po) files are supported in all versions of WorlsServer by the Portable Object Studio File Type. This file type extracts msigds text as the source segment and the msgstr text as the target segment. For instance, in the source *.po file you might find:

msgid "Quality"
msgstr "Quality"

After segmentation, the msgid text will appear as source segment. The target segment will appear as empty (unless there is a 100% or ICE match everage from the TM).

After translation, in the target *.po file, the msgid text original text will be replaced by the translation. Example:

User-added image
Target file:
msgid "Quality"
msgstr "Qualità"

This is the same behaviour as in Trados Studio. However, be aware that until WorldServer version 11.7.3, the behaviour of the Portable Object Studio File Type was different in WorldServer than it was in Trados Studio. This has been changed and aligned starting from WorldServer version 11.8.1:

WorldServer - Portable Object File Type not populating Target Field
