TitleWorldServer - which version of Adobe Indesign IDML files are supported in each WorldServer version?
URL Name000010530
SummaryWhile WorldServer officially supports IDML files created in Adobe InDesign versions CS4 to CC (Creative Cloud), sometimes you might encounter an error related to unsupported version during segmentation. This happens because Adobe regularly releases updates to its Creative Cloud Suite. If an updated version has been released after the release of your WorldServer version, that IDML CC file could still not be supported. This article provides a detailed list of WorldServer versions and the supported InDesign CC version as tested by SDL Support.

Question
We have submitted an IDML file to our Worldserver and although the file has been created in Adobe InDesign CC - which is officially supported - the file cannot be segmented because of the an error pointing to unsupported version as described in this article:

Error message when segmenting an IDML or a MIF file in WorldServer: 'The selected IDML/MIF file was created by an unsupported version of Adobe InDesign/FrameMaker'

The article explains the workaround to avoid the error. However, I wonder why can the IDML file not be segmented since it  has been created in a supported version of Adobe InDesign?

Answer
While WorldServer officially supports IDML files created in Adobe InDesign versions CS4 to CC (Creative Cloud), sometimes you might encounter an error related to unsupported version during segmentation. This happens because Adobe regularly releases updates to its Creative Cloud Suite. If an updated version has been released after the release of your WorldServer version, that IDML CC file could still not be supported.

- In SDL WorldServer 10.4.5., the latest Adobe CC (Creative Cloud) supported version is version InDesign CC 2017.1 (12.1): 14 April 2017.  IDML files created in later versions such as CC 2018 will encounter a segmentation error.

- In SDL WorldServer 11.3.x and 11.4.x, the latest Adobe CC (Creative Cloud) supported version is version InDesign CC 2018.2 (13.2), released in March 2018. This means that all versions between CS4 and CC 2018.2 (13.2) can be segmented without errors. IDML files created in later CC versions such as 14.0 and later will encounter the error.
  • InDesign CC 2019 (14.0.1): November 2018.
  • InDesign CC 2019 (14.0.2): April 2019
  • InDesign CC 2019 (14.0.3): April 2019
- In SDL WorldServer 11.5 these Adobe CC (Creative Cloud) versions (14.x) are also supported:
  • InDesign CC 2019 (14.0.1): November 2018.
  • InDesign CC 2019 (14.0.2): April 2019
  • InDesign CC 2019 (14.0.3): August 2019
- In SDL WorldServer 11.6.1 these Adobe CC (Creative Cloud) versions (15.0) are also supported:
  • InDesign CC 2020 (15.0): November 2019
  • InDesign CC 2020 (15.0.1): December 2019
  • InDesign CC 2020 (15.1) (released in June 2020)
  • InDesign CC 2021 (16.0) (released in October 2020)
Note: this information has been validated by SDL Support. However, we have found that in some cases, files in higher versions are processed correctly. It might be related to the content of the single files. Please test your IDML file in WorldServer and if you find one of the errors that can be fixed by changing the InDesign version, try to apply the workarounds provided in the respective articles:

SDL WorldServer - Error message when segmenting an IDML file: 'The selected IDML file is invalid because required files are missing in IDML package. Probably file is corrupted'
SDL WorldServer - Error message when segmenting an IDML or a MIF file: 'The selected IDML/MIF file was created by an unsupported version of Adobe InDesign/FrameMaker'
