We are constantly reviewing and improving our products. We release enhancements and fixes to resolve customer issues as and when required. This article lists the enhancements and fixes for Trados Studio 2021 to date. Hotfixes are bundled into service releases or cumulative update patches that are installed automatically using the AutoUpdate functionality in Trados Studio.

Cumulative Update 2 for Trados Studio 2021 (Build 16.0.2.3343, released on 8 October 2020)

Trados Studio 2021 Cumulative Update 2 includes the following:

Performance improvements

• Faster access to Project Settings when working with very large TMs. (LG-24716), (LCC-10400)
• Multiple virtually merged files now open faster. (CRQ-10687)

• Removed the Dictionaries option from the Language Cloud wizard. This option was only relevant for Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) engines which have been replaced with Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models in Language Cloud. If you need to use your glossaries during MT pre-translation, add your machine translation glossaries to a Language Cloud Translation Engine that you can then use in Trados Studio. To add a machine translation glossary, go to your RWS Machine Translation account Machine Translation account > Settings > Dictionaries. (LG-25800)

• The Translation Result window now displays correctly repaired tag pairs in translation matches. (LG-25479)

• The file tag showing the location of the project file opened in the Editor view was incorrectly pointing to the temporary project folder location. This issue is now fixed, and Trados Studio now shows the actual permanent location of the project file. (LG-22933)

• The Trados Business Manager Lite plug-in can now be activated in Trados Studio 2021. (CRQ-20659)

• Fixed “Object reference” error that was occurring when switching to a different view after completing a task in the Files view. (LG-25238)

• Trados Studio stopped working if the project template used for new local projects included a translation engine that was not available for the active Language Cloud account. This issue is now fixed and Trados Studio shows a warning message instead of closing unexpectedly. (LG-25184)

• Trados Studio could not use RWS Machine Translation through Language Cloud if one of the project’s language pairs did not have a corresponding NMT model in the active Language Cloud account. This is now fixed to enable Machine Translation for the other language pairs in the project with available NMT models. (LG-25193)

• Fixed error that occurred when adding comments to a virtually merged file. (LG-25109)

• Fixed "Dependency file not found" error that occurred occasionally when working with large files in local projects. (LG-25845)

• Fixed error that occurred when retrieving translation results from NMT providers in projects with language variants (fr-ca, en-gb, etc.) (CRQ-17650). The only exception to this fix is Spanish-Latin American (es-419) which is still not mapped to its corresponding NMT provider. This will be fixed in a future release. 

• Fixed connection issue to Machine Translation when working with Trados Studio on virtual machines and switching between remote connections. (CRQ-20303)

• Fixed connection issue to Language Cloud Terminology that occurred on some localized Trados Studio versions (LG-25124, LG-11388)

• Fixed issue that was preventing Studio 2021 to access Trados Live Essential if the User Interface language was set to Korean. (CRQ-21211)

• Small usability enhancements in the Task History tab for manual and automatic tasks inside Cloud project packages. (LG-25153, LG-25043)

• Fixed error that occurred when creating projects with legacy PowerPoint format (*.ppt) files. (CRQ-21024)

• Fixed broken link in the Language Cloud Terminology Settings window. (LG-25126)

• Addressed several localization issues in the User Interface.

• Cloud projects are now also tagged with the name of the account that created the project. You can find this information in the Project Details window > Account Name after selecting a cloud project in Trados Studio. (LG-23938)

• The Analysis Statistics window can now also compute Locked segments for cloud project files. However, the locked segments count for cloud projects ignores any new segments that you subsequently lock or unlock in the Editor view.  Such segments are also not updated when the cloud project is uploaded back to your Cloud account. This will be addressed in a future update. (LG-23597)

• When selecting multiple files in a Cloud project for opening in the Editor view, Trados Studio groups all files in a single notification with an option to Open Multiple Files. (LG-24203)

• Trados Studio no longer shows an error message after saving Cloud projects while offline. (LG-24998)

• When translating segments in a cloud project file with available termbase results, Trados Studio was sometimes showing the following message in the Editor view: "The source or the target language of the currently processed document is not defined in the selected termbase". This issue is now fixed, and Trados Studio can automatically map the project languages in the selected termbase to the project languages. (LG-24959)

• Trados Studio opened linguistic review tasks in Translation mode if the project file were accessed from the Notifications area instead of double-clicking on the file in the Files view. This is now fixed so that Trados Studio always opens linguistic review tasks in Review mode. (LG-25173)

• Vendor users could not see their assigned cloud tasks unless they previously accepted them from their Cloud account. This issue is now fixed and Trados Studio can display unaccepted assigned tasks in vendor order templates. This enables vendor users to accept and work with such tasks outside their Cloud account as well. (LG-24221)

• Fixed error that occurred retrieving some cloud project tasks via the Open in Studio option in the browser. (LG-25164)

• The translation progress for cloud projects did not update correctly in specific scenarios. This issue is now addressed so that the Progress column always reflects instantly the current translation state of any project. (LG-24725)

• Batch-delete script operations for server-based translation memories are now handled in Trados GroupShare. This enables Trados Studio to process server-based translation memories faster, regardless of their size. This new behavior is available for translation memories on servers using Trados GroupShare 2020 CU2 or later. Batch deleting only works for server TMs for which the character-based concordance search is disabled. (CRQ-15863)

• Trados Studio now remembers your settings for sorting projects in the Open Trados GroupShare project dialog box. (LG-24543)

• In specific scenarios, GroupShare projects created from a template and published without a due date were not visible on the GroupShare server. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-18638)

• General
  • Corrected language direction for several right-to-left languages in Online Editor. (LCC-10145)
  • Fixed issue with the Advanced button on the Inline Tags pages not displaying the Advanced Settings window. (CRQ-21027)
  • Fixed localization issues.
     
• Translation memory engine
  • Improved TM import performance for third-party TMX flavours. (LCC-10482)
  • Improved tokenization for Korean language. (LCC-10462)
  • Improved pattern for recognizing Korean numbers. (CRQ-20110)
     
• Word file type (97-2003 and 2007-2019)

  • Added RegEx support for defining non-translatable styles in *.docx and *.doc files. This enables Trados Studio to identify formatting styles based on regular expressions instead of spelling out multiple style names. Text formatted in the style that matches the expression will not be extracted for translation. To define non-translatable styles based on regular expressions go to File > Options > Microsoft Word file types > Styles. (LF-5150).

  • Added support for defining non-translatable content embedded anywhere in the Word document. The new Extract in all paragraphs option under Microsoft Word file types > Embedded Content enables you to apply regular expressions to the entire text, and not just to text that matches a specific type of document structure information. (LF-5140)

  • Removed Embedded (legacy) preview mode for *.doc and *.docx files. This has been gradually replaced by the HTML preview mode which now contains all the required functionality to fully replace this deprecated option. (LG-23662) 

  • Trados Studio was sometimes failing to save the target for files that contained hyperlinks with ampersands. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-20661)

  • When translating files with the embedded Excel content, Trados Studio was sometimes showing an “Object reference” error message. This problem has been fixed. (CRQ-19876)

  • Fixed issue that was causing the following error message when opening a file for translation: “Current configuration on stack is different than the one supplied”. (CRQ-19946)

  • Fixed lag in external preview for Microsoft Word documents. (CRQ-20709)

  • Fixed wrong processing for specific *.docx files. (LF-5290)

• Excel file type

  • Added color inclusion filter to the Excel file type: Only include cells having the selected text color. Previously, the Excel file type supported excluding text that matched a specified color. With this new option, you can now also reverse the logic, and exclude text that does NOT match the color you specify. (LF-5142)

  • Enabled HTML preview for legacy Excel 97-2003 (*.xls) files.

  • Improved performance: Trados Studio can now generate the target for large bilingual Excel files much faster. (CRQ-20597)

  • "Process all cells" option is now correctly set as default after resetting the Content processing settings. (LF-5286)

  • Fixed several specific preview issues. (LF-5204, LF-5203, LF-5202, LF-5201)

  • Fixed preview issue for cells with currency. (LF-5289)

• Photoshop file type

  • Added handling of formatted text inside paragraphs. This enables Trados Studio to extract text inside <cf> tag pairs available in *.psd; *.pdd, *.psdt files. These pairs define the way text is formatted inside paragraphs. (LF-5101)

  • Addressed issue that was causing “Failed to save target content: Invalid case” error message. (CRQ-19725)

  • Fixed issue that was preventing Trados Studio from opening specific files due to a third-party component. (LG-5287)

  • Fixed specific QuickInsert issues. (LF-5300, LF-5174)

  • Fixed issue that was incorrectly decoding the Text layer name. (LF-5291)

  • Fixed several issues with the HTML preview. (LF-5268, LF-5186, LF-5185, LF-5184)

  • Fixed error message displayed when saving the target file after adding two soft breaks in the file (LF-5175).

  • Fixed issue with a third-party component that preventing Trados Studio from opening specific files (LF-5096, LF-5287, LF-4929)

  • Fixed issue that misplaced translated word after generating the target file. (CRQ-19467)

  • Fixed segmentation issues with *.pdd and *.psdt files. (CRQ-20790)

  • Addressed issue that was corrupting *.psd files when generating the target version. (CRQ-20866)

• Subtitle formats file type

• Introduced video preview. When translating texts for subtitling, you can now preview the video directly from the Editor view. The preview always shows the part of the video corresponding to the text you are translating. (LF-5146)

• Fixed issue with the side-by-side preview. (LF-5172)

• Custom Plain Text Filter

  • Fixed issue where the dollar sign not always being transferred to the target file. (CRQ-19746)

• FrameMaker file type

  • Fixed issue with symbol tags placed at the beginning or at the end of the segment not always being imported. (CRQ-4065)

  • Fixed Error message displayed when trying to save the target for specific files. (LF-5106)

  • Leading/trailing variable tags formatted differently than the rest of the text were incorrectly placed outside the segment boundaries. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-5542)

  • Fixed issue with empty <cf> tags created for specific files. (LF-3462)

• IDML file type

• Fixed issue with data merging hyperlinks being treated as normal hyperlinks and preventing Trados Studio from saving the target file. (CRQ-20177)

• In specific scenarios, Trados Studio was showing the following error message when saving the target files “IDML: Failed to save target content: Extra reference tag within the segment ID ”. This issue is now fixed. (CRQ-20598)

• Fixed font mapping issue that was causing garbled text in the target file for the Japanese - Sophos Sans font. (CRQ-21275)

• Visio file type

  • Fixed issue with some content not being extracted for translation from files created in LucidChart. (CRQ-20640)

• XML v2 file type

  • Fixed issue with not being able to download the target for specific files. (CRQ-20928)

  • Fixed issue with Verification not working due to wrong input path. (LF-5281)

• Legacy XML file type

  • Fixed “Error StartIndex cannot be less than zero” specific error occurring for XML files processed with custom legacy XML file type. (CRQ-20663)

• Open Document Spreadsheet ODS

  • Fixed preview issue for sheets without content. (LF-5275)

• Email file type

  • Fixed several preview issues (LF-5193, LF-5194, LF-5192)

• Adobe InDesign CS4-CC IDML file type

  • Added option to extract number formatting. (CRQ-7983)

• Open Document file type

• Enabled HTML preview (*.odt, *.ods, *.odp). (LF-5221)

• PowerPoint file type

• Enabled HTML preview for legacy 97-2003 (*.ppt) documents. (LF-5205)

• Portable Object file type

  • Enabled HTML preview for (*.po) documents. (LF-5197)

Cannot create new projects based on large files from the Welcome view. To work around this, translate large files using Translate Single Document or create a new local project from the Projects view instead. (LG-25851)
This known issue will be fixed with a future release.

Cumulative Update 1 for Trados Studio 2021 (Build 16.0.1.2917, released on 17 August 2020)

Trados Studio 2021 Cumulative Update 1 addresses the following issues:

• Fixed issue that occurred when running the Verify Files batch task on XML files processed with the XML v2 filter. (LG-25190)

• Fixed issue that prevented Trados Studio from notifying of available updates when the Automatic check option is enabled under File > Options > Automatic Updates. (LG-25240)

• Changed options under Automatic Updates from checkbox fields to radio buttons to ensure only one Product Update option is active. (LG-25239)

• When trying to download certain cloud projects as an Administrator user with a Language Cloud - Translation Management subscription, Trados Studio was showing a “Server responded with unauthorized...” error message. This issue is now fixed. (LG-25176)

• When trying to sign in to Language Cloud with an account for which the user name cannot be retrieved, Trados Studio was showing the following error message and failed to start: "Failed to add window command bar extensions". To work around this issue, Trados Studio now displays such users by default as "Cloud Account" with CA initials. (LG-25200)

• The video links available in the useful tips and What's New wizard intro have been updated to match latest Studio 2021 content. Localized versions of some videos will be provided soon. (LG-25199)

• Fixed issue that was truncating the offline deactivation certificate code in the Product Activation window when using the CTRL+V shortcut or the Paste option in the context menu. (LG-25195)

Downloading and Installing Cumulative Updates

A cumulative update is usually applied when you use the AutoUpdate functionality available in Trados Studio. However, AutoUpdate is not working as expected in the initial Trados Studio 2021 RTM build (16.0.0.2838) so you will not be automatically notified of this update, regardless of the AutoUpdate mechanism you have selected. To manually fetch and install CU1, go to Help tab > Check for updates. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and apply the update. With future updates, this issue will not occur.
NOTE: Applying the update may take some time, as the Trados Studio installation fully replaces the previously installed version. As a rule of thumb, applying the update will take roughly the same time as installing the application originally. RWS recommends that you use AutoUpdate. However, you can also apply the patch manually, as follows:

1. Close Trados Studio 2021.

2. Download the ZIP file SDLTradosStudio2021_CU2_3343.zip from our FTP site (Username: sdlpatches, password: 5dlpatch35).

3. The ZIP file contains an .exe file. Extract this file to a temporary folder of your choice, such as C:\temp. This .exe file applies to all editions of Trados Studio 2021.

4. Double-click the .exe file. This will install the latest release and replace as well as update the files in the Trados Studio 2021 installation folder as appropriate.

After the update release has been installed and Trados Studio or your PC restarted, the issues described in this article should no longer occur.
