How to activate Passolo 2016 translation software with a Passolo 2018 license key

Symptoms/Context

You have a Passolo 2018 license code (Single-user or Network) in your RWS account but you wish to activate your Passolo 2016 translation software with this Passolo 2018 license key or connect your Passolo 2016 software to a server hosting a Passolo 2018 Network license activation.

Resolution

1. Install the latest version of Passolo 2016
2. Make sure you select the Use Passolo 2018 License option and click Product Activation:

3. A new product activation window will appear (this time the one belonging to Passolo 2018) and you can paste in the Passolo 2018 license code followed by clicking the Activate button.

4. The activation process will be successful and you will have the Passolo 2016 translation software activated with the Passolo 2018 license key.

The process is almost the same for Network licenses. You need to activate the 2018 Passolo network license (after you upgrade it) > open Passolo 2016 > check "Use Passolo 2018 License" box > click on Activate > Alternative activation options > Use a license server > type your server name > click "Connect".

Note: There is a registry setting for this option in: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SDL\Passolo 2016\More > Use2018License

Root Cause

The latest version of Passolo 2016 is not installed on your computer and the option "Use Passolo 2018 License" (specially enabled by this Passolo 2018 installation) is not selected.
