Trying to open a file-based termbase that is located on a network/shared drive is returning in SDL Trados Studio and/or SDL MultiTerm the error message:

The process cannot access the file '\\[Network Path]\[Termbase Name].sdltb' because it is being used by another process.

Workaround: Move *.sdltb to local HDD

Move and/or create a copy of the file-based termbase and place it on the local hard disk drive.
The termbase will then open as expected in SDL Trados Studio and/or SDL MultiTerm

 

Solution: SDL Trados GroupShare

If you are more users that are working/maintaining one or several termbases and constantly access the terminology at the same time, then it is recommended to use the server solution for server-based termbases.
It is called SDL Trados GroupShare that includes the MultiTerm Server, Translation Memory Server and Project Server components. Depending on your needs you can also i.e. just buy a license for the MultiTerm Server component that will then allow to create and work with server-based termbases.
