Error in SDL Trados Studio: " Failed to activate view 'Translation Memories' "

Scope/Environment

SDL Trados Studio

Symptoms/Context

You try to activate the Translation Memories view.
You receive following error message:

Failed to activate view 'Translation Memories'

Resolution

Workaround: Rename translation memory / organization

Solution 1. Delete list of TMs open in Translation Memory view

Close Studio.
Locate the file TranslationMemoryRepository.xml in:
- For Studio 2021: C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio16
- For Studio 2019: C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15.0.0.0
- For Studio 2017: C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0
- For Studio 2015: C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\12.0.0.0
- For Studio 2014: C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\11.0.0.0
- For Studio 2011: C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\10.0.0.0
Rename the TranslationMemoryRepository.xml for example to TranslationMemoryRepository.xml_OLD.
Open Studio again.

Solution 2.

a) Rename TM

Warning:

Renaming a translation memory (TM) will affect all ongoing projects that are using the renamed TM.
Renaming an organization will affect all ongoing projects that are using a TM in the renamed organization.

Refer to step III for instructions how to avoid problems.

Access the SDL Studio GroupShare user interface in your web browser.
Go to the Translation Memories tab.
Select the translation memory that contains an ampersand (&).
Rename it via the Edit button.

b) Rename organization

Access the SDL Studio GroupShare user interface in your web browser.
Go to the User Management tab.
Select the organization that contains an ampersand (&) or number sign (#).
Rename it via the Edit Organization button.

Solution 3. Adjust ongoing projects

If any ongoing projects use the translation memory or a translation memory in an organization that you just renamed, the corresponding references have to be fixed.

Open SDL Trados Studio
Activate the project that uses the TM.
Go to Home > Project Settings > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs / [Relevant language Pair] > Translation Memory and Automated Translation.
Select the renamed TM (which will show as unavailable).
Click Remove.
Re-add the TM via Add > Server-based Translation Memory.

Root Cause

This error occurs when Studio finds an ampersand (&) or a number sign (#) in a server-based translation memory or a number sign in the name of a GroupShare organization.
Corrupt TranslationMemoryRepository.xml file.
