This article describes how to update existing spellchecking dictionaries in SDL Trados Studio. This can be useful to enhance the support and spellchecking quality for some of the languages.

To find and apply updated language dictionaries (in this example Icelandic (Iceland)):

1. Exit SDL Trados Studio if it is running.
2. Download updated dictionaries from the Web. They are typically available from a number of active public open-source sites. The most prominent site is the Wiki site for OpenOffice. Open this site by pointing your browser at http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries and scroll down to Icelandic (Iceland).
3. Download the spelling file (called is_IS.zip at the time of writing).
4. Extract the downloaded file into the Hunspell folder in Studio, \Program Files\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio1\HunspellDictionaries\ by default. The required files in the ZIP file are called is_IS.aff and is_IS.dic.
   NOTE: as this action overwrites the existing files in this folder, you may want to make backup copies of the same files beforehand.
5. Re-start SDL Trados Studio. The new spelling dictionaries should now be active.

Spell checking in SDL Trados Studio is based on the Hunspell engine, an open-source development that is also used in other applications such as OpenOffice and StarOffice. You can download updated spell-checking dictionaries from public sites for use in SDL Trados Studio, thereby updating the spell checking support.

Some of the spelling files on the Wiki web site for OpenOffice are part of so-called "Pack" files. In this case, the pack file typically contains both hyphenation and spelling files (which typically are ZIP files within the pack ZIP file). In this case, you only need to extract the .aff and .dic files for use with SDL Trados Studio.
