The upLIFT technology leverages segment fragments from TMs to increase translation productivity and speed.
Translation Memory created In SDL Trados Studio 2017
The upLIFT functionality/feature is available by default for file-based Translation Memories that you create in SDL Trados Studio 2017 or higher.
Translation Memory created In SDL Trados Studio 2015 (or earlier) to be used in SDL Trados Studio 2017 (and later)Translation Memories created in Studio 2015 (and earlier) require to be prepared to enable the upLIFT functionality to work in Trados 2017.
Manual steps:
- Open SDL Trados Studio 2017 (or later) and go to the Translation Memories view.
- Open the Translation Memory and do a right-click on it and select Settings
- Go to Fragment Alignment and select ON in the section Fragment Alignment Status
- Click Build Translation Model and afterwards click Align Translation Units

upLift is available in SDL GroupShare.
upLIFT is available through two new functions:
- Fragment Recall - makes TMs smarter by creating correspondence between parts of source and target sentences and then suggesting those fragments during translation. The fragment recall is integrated into Trados Studio with matches coming directly from the TM through AutoSuggest.
- Fuzzy Match Repair - improves TM fuzzy matches by looking for replacements for mismatched source content in other resources like termbases, fragment recall matches or machine translation
With Fragment Recall, Trados Studio identifies matching fragments from a TM’s existing translation units. This works in two ways:
- Matching fragments in new segments against whole translation units. If parts of the source segment were translated before as a whole TU, they are presented to the user as a match and through AutoSuggest. Punctuation differences are corrected.
- Matching fragments in new segments against corresponding fragments inside translation units. This goes even deeper, as parts of the source segment can be matched with parts of TUs.
With upLIFT, Trados Studio uses existing trusted resources like termbases, fragment matches or machine translation to help repair fuzzy matches.
Fuzzy Match repairing can mean changing, deleting, inserting or moving a word or phrase in the fuzzy match. Punctuation changes can also occur.
Fragment recall and fuzzy match repair work because the TM technology in Trados Studio now has fragment alignment, which is an alignment between parts of the TU source and target segment. TMs can be upgraded to use fragment alignment, so the upLIFT technology is available for new as well as existing TMs.
Note: Fragment alignment is available for TMs with more than 1,000 TUs and will have optimum performance starting with 5,000 TUs.
Trados Studio builds a translation model and aligns the translation units (TUs). Any new TU you add after enabling fragment alignment is immediately available for fragment recall.
Use the Fragment Alignment page of the Translation Memory Settings dialog to set up fragment matching for the translation memory. To display the Translation Memory Settings dialog box, select the translation memory in the Translation Memories view, right-click and select Settings. Select Fragment Alignment from the Translation Memory Settings dialog box navigation tree to display the Fragment alignment settings.

- Enables or disables fragment alignment support for the TM.
- When you disable fragment alignment, the translation model and the alignment data are removed from the TM.

- In this section you have information and options for the translation model that the fragment alignment is based on.
- After you enable fragment alignment on a TM, you have to build the translation model by selecting Build Translation Model.
- You can see when was the last time the translation model was built and how many translation units were added since.
- From time to time, Trados Studio will show a recommendation to re-build the translation model.

Alignment |
- In this section you have information and options for the TU alignment that will be used by Trados Studio to match source and target segment parts and provide fragment matches during translation.
- After you have built the translation model, the Align Translation Units options is enabled and you can select it.
- You can see how many unaligned translation units reside in your TM. This is useful if you do not enable the Align new content automatically option. In this case, once in a while, you should re-align the TUs.
- To only align new TUs, enable the Quick Align option.
