You are not sure how to proceed to export or import Translation Memory data in Trados Studio or Trados Groupshare or just need more information about importing and exporting the Translation Memory data.

Through Trados Studio:

Exporting Translation Memory data: 

The Translation Memory data from a Translation Memory is exported into a *.tmx (Translation Memory Exchange) file. A *.tmx file contains translation units and their associated fields.

1. In the navigation tree from the Translation Memories view, select the translation memory whose contents you want to export.
   • If the Translation Memory does not appear in the navigation tree, select File > Open > Open Translation Memory.
2. Select Home tab > Tasks group > Export. The Export Wizard is displayed on the Export Options page.
3. Click Browse. The Select Export File dialog box is displayed. Browse to the location where you want the export file to be created, specify a name for the file, and click Save.
4. Click Next to start the export process. The Exporting page is displayed.
5. When the export has finished, the items on this page are listed as Complete.
6. Click Finish.

The exported data is now available as a *.tmx document in the location you specified.

Importing Translation Memory data: 

Importing data from supported document types into a translation memory in the Translation Memories view of Trados Studio. Imported data contains translation units with their associated fields. You can only import supported document types. 

NOTE: If you want to import several files, place them all in a single folder so that you can import the folder.

1. In the navigation tree in the Translation Memories view, select the translation memory you want to import data into.
   • If the Translation Memory does not appear in the navigation tree, select File > Open > Open Translation Memory.
2. Select Home tab > Import (or you can right-click the Translation Memory and select Import from the shortcut menu). The Import Wizard is displayed on the Import Files page.
3. Add the files to be imported and complete the Import Files page:
   • If you want to select a single file, click Add Files.
   • If you want to select a folder, click Add Folder.
   • Continue selecting files until the list of files to be imported is complete.
4. Click Next.
   • If you are importing a *.tmx file, complete the TMX Import Options page.
   • If you are not importing a *.tmx file, complete the Bilingual Document Import Options page.
   • If you are importing an *.sdlalign file, complete the Alignment Import Options page.
5. Click Finish when you are ready to start the import. The Importing page is displayed. This page displays each file being imported and indicates the status of each import.
6. When the import has finished, the items on this page are listed as Complete.
7. Click Close.

Through Trados Groupshare:

Exporting Translation Memory data:

1. Login to the Trados Groupshare WebUI.
2. To export translation units from a Translation Memory, open the Translation Memories view.
3. Select the TMs from which you wish to export TUs.
4. Click Export from the tab menu. NOTE: After you start an export, Trados Groupshare does the work as a background task, leaving you free to do other actions.
5. Monitor the progress in the Background Tasks view and, if finished, you can download the exported TM.
6. The TM is exported as a *.tmx file. To download this file, from Background Tasks, double-click the finished task and then click Download.

Importing Translation Memory data:

1. Login to the Trados Groupshare Web UI.
2. Open the Translation Memories view.
3. Select a translation memory and click Import on the menu bar.
4. Choose your general and advanced import options in the pop-up dialog box.
5. Click Finish.

NOTE: Trados Groupshare imports translation units as a background task.

Importing into a Translation Memory enables you to load data from previous translations into a new Translation Memory. This allows you to exchange Translation Memory data with third parties or between different participants in the translation supply chain who may use different product versions. You can also import data from bilingual documents or alignment result files (*.sdlalign) which contain both the source text and translated text.

About "Exporting Translation Memory Data"

The export feature allows you to export some or all of the contents of a translation memory to a *.tmx or * . tmz.gz file. You may want to export to:
- Exchange translation memory data with third parties or between different participants in the translation supply chain who may use different product versions. For example, you may want to export data to a TMX format that can be used in Trados 2007.
- Create a secure backup of your Translation Memory data. RWS recommends that you perform weekly exports to back up the data from your Translation Memory.
- Repair/re-index translation memories.
- Reverse the Translation Memory source and target languages.
