Symptoms/Context
You create a target file in Trados Studio, but when trying to open it in MS Word, the following error appears:

Verification (F8) does not spot any issues in the project. A "Copy source to target" run on the source file creates a working translation that will correctly open in MS Word. If you try to re-create the SDLXLIFF with either a Pre-Translation or Perfect Match with the old SDLXLIFF, the same issue will occur.
Resolution
Open the SDLXLIFF file in an advanced text editor (for example Notepad++). The highlighted entities, or similar, are causing this issue. If you remove them the issue is solved. These are not visible if you search for the same text in the Trados Studio target segment.

In case you cannot find any entities like in the example above, you can try to identify the root cause of the issue as described in the following articles:

Error when saving Word target file: Failed to save target content: '', hexadecimal value 0x1E, is an invalid character. Line 1, position X.
Trados Studio - How to troubleshoot problematic files.
Root Cause
The translator inserted control characters into the translation most likely by Copying/cutting and pasting from Word or other rich text format which utilizes and supports such invisible characters.
These are invisible in Trados Studio, but can be seen if the text is pasted into Notepad++
