Error message when installing SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP1/SP2 or SDL MultiTerm 2014 SP1/SP2 - instructions for installing manually

Symptoms/Context

You start installing SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP1/SP2 or SDL MultiTerm 2014 SP1/SP2 from your SDL Account. After extracting the components, the installation stops due to Chainer or Chainerhost errors, or because prerequisite components failed to install.

You may receive one of the following error messages:

  • An error occurred while downloading a required file. You may retry downloading the file or cancel setup. 
  • This product cannot be installed on a machine that has SDL Trados 2007 on it. Please remove SDL Trados 2007 and retry.

  • Set-up did not complete. The error is: Package ‘SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module for Studio 2014’ could not be installed. Fatal error during installation. Error number: 1603.

  • Error 1722: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.
  • Root element is missing.

  • An unhandled exception of type 'System.Resources.MissingManifestResourceException' occurred in mscorlib.dll

  • An error occurred and the program was aborted. You can try running the program again but if the same problem repeat, please generate a debug (usually found in C:\ProgramData\SDL\Chainer\Logs) and contact support.

  • InterpreterException: The expression threw an exceptionChainer.ProductInfo.Family(newGuid("{1F4F1D2A-D9DA-32CF-9909-48485DA06DD5}")).FirstOrDefault() !=null &&newVersion(Chainer.ProductInfo.Family(newGuid("{1F4F1D2A-D9DA-32CF-9909-48485DA06DD5}")).First().VersionString) >=new Version(10, 0, 40219)

This list is not exhaustive, other error messages may occur as well.

Resolution
  1. Check that all the prerequisites are available on your computer and install any missing components:

    NOTE: Open the Dependencies folder. By default this folder is available in: C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\Dependencies 
     
    • Prerequisites for Studio 2014 SP1/SP2 / MultiTerm 2014 SP1/SP2:
       
      • 2008_SP1_vcredist_x86.exe 
      • 2010_vcredist_x86.exe 
      • o2003PIA.msi (depends on your Office version)
      • o2007PIA.msi (depends on your Office version)
      • OpenXMLSDKv2.msi
      • Microsoft WSE 2.0 SP3 Runtime.msi
      • jre-8-windows-i586.exe

     
  2. Install the main components of Studio/MultiTerm:
     
    • All separate installes are available in the Modules folder:
       
      • Studio 2014 SP1/SP2C:ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLTradosStudio2014_SPx\modules:
        • TranslationStudio3.msi
        • TradosCompatibility2.msi
           
      • MultiTerm 2014 SP1/SP2: C:ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLMultiTerm2014_SPx\modules:
        • MTAdministrator11.msi (SDL MultiTerm Administrator)
        • MTConvert11.msi (SDL MultiTerm Convert)
        • MTCore11.msi(SDL MultiTerm Core Components)
        • MTStudio11.msi (SDL MultiTerm Desktop)
        • MTWidget11.msi (SDL MultiTerm Widget)
        • MTWordIntegration11.msi (SDL MultiTerm Word integration)


After installing all prerequisites and the main components, Studio 2014 SP1/SP2 and/or MultiTerm 2014 SP1/SP2 should work correctly on your computer.

NOTE: In case error "Package ‘SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module for Studio 2014’ could not be installed. Fatal error during installation. Error number: 1603." persists, follow the steps mentioned in this article: Error: Package ‘SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module for Studio 2014 (or higher)’ could not be installed. Fatal error during installation. Error number: 1603.

Root Cause
Chainer or Chainerhost errors usually occur when the installer cannot execute all its components, or if one of the prerequisite components fails to start. You can also try to work around the issue by manually installing Studio/MultiTerm, as described in the Resolution section below.
