Question
If you have custom settings for the XML file type, you can easily convert them to XML 2 by importing them into a new custom XML 2 file type.
Converting XML 1 settings enables you to reuse them for new projects created in Trados Studio 2022 and later.

Answer

Starting with Trados Studio 2022, the XML 2 file type has fully replaced the XML 1 file type.

Existing projects that use the XML 1 file types continue to be processed with this legacy filter. However, starting with Trados Studio 2024 these filters will no longer be supported. Please find further details here: https://docs.rws.com/1145319/1148909/trados-studio-2024/file-types-and-core-components-changes

To convert XML 1 settings and import them into a new XML 2 custom file type:

Procedure

Export XML 1 settings from older Trados Studio versions

1.    Open Trados Studio
2.    To export XML1 settings from a specific project, go to Project Settings > File Types. To export settings specified globally in Trados Studio, go to File > Options > File Types.
3.    In the File Types table on the right, select the XML 1 file type from which you want to export the file type settings and click Export Settings. This option is only available if this file type contains custom settings.
4.    Specify the location where you want to export the SDLFTSETTINGS file and click Save.

Import XML 1 settings into custom XML 2 file type

1.    Open Trados Studio.
2.    To import XML1 settings for a specific project, go to Project Settings > File Types. To import settings for all future projects, go to File > Options > File Types.
3.    Click New… next to the File Types table.
4.    In the Select Type dialog box, select XML 2 and click OK.
5.    On the File Type Information page, give a name to the XML 2 file type and enter a description in the File type identifier field. For example: XML 2.0.0.0 based on XML 1. Always include “XML v 2.0.0.0” in the description so that you can easily distinguish between other XML IDs in the list of file types.
6.    On the Parser Rule Type page, select the XPath rules option.
7.    On the XML Settings Import page, select Define Settings based on XML and click Browse to import your XML 1 file type settings.
8.    In the Import settings dialogue, make sure to select the SDL settings files (*sdlftsettings)  option and browse to the location where your file is available on your computer.
9.    Select your file and click Next to review the status of the settings imported from your SDLFTSSETTINGS file. Any converted settings that need to be manually reviewed are emphasized with a warning or information sign.
10.    Verify that the File Detection and Namespaces settings have been imported correctly and make adjustments if necessary. For more information, see XML Detection settings and  Creating custom XML 2.0 file types in the online Help (if no changes are necessary you can ignore and close pop-ups).
11.    On the Parser Rules page, check the list of converted settings and manually fix any settings that show a Warning icon in the Details column.

We also attached two sample empty file types to this article if you need to customize XML v1.3 or v1.2 in Trados Studio 2022 and you do not have access to Trados Studio 2021.
