Symptoms/Context

One of the following error messages may appear when opening a document or project in Trados Studio:

  • An unexpected error has occurred while loading the global plug-in services.
  • Could not find a part of the path [...]
  • The device is not ready.
  • The following elements are not closed: [...]
  • There is an error in the XML document. The following string is not closed: [...]
  • Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created (when opening a GroupShare project via a provided link)
  • Failed to initialize view 'XliffManager _view'
  • An error has occurred in the script on this page - Failed to activate view 'Editor'

Or, you want to reset your Trados Studio to its default settings, for example because you have resized some windows and they are now blocking other windows (like the Search pop-up window).

NOTE: The error messages may be slightly different, and the list may not be complete.

Resolution

You can reset Trados Studio to default settings by renaming the following folders on your machine:

NOTE: You can also delete the folders below, but ensure that you first back them up, including their contents, to avoid any data loss that may occur.

Windows Vista/7/8/10:

For Trados Studio 2022:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Trados - rename the Trados Studio folder

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Trados - rename the Trados Studio folder

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents - rename the Studio [version] folder to Studio [version]_old

For Trados Studio 2021 and older:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio (and ProjectApi folder for older versions than Trados Studio 2021)

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio (and ProjectApi folder for older versions than Trados Studio 2021)

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents - rename the Studio [version] folder to Studio [version]_old

(You can also directly copy/paste the above paths in File Explorer in Windows, then press the Enter key on the keyboard, to reach those folders on your system. The %username% part acts as a wildcard.)

See this video as an example of how the reset can be done:

Note: The ProjectApi folder is present for older versions of Trados Studio than 2021 - you can skip that step if not found at location.

For Windows XP:

  1. C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio and ProjectApi folder
  2. C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio folder
  3. C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\My Documents - rename the Studio [version] folder to Studio [version]_old
Root Cause
These error messages may be caused by corrupted settings files for Trados Studio. These files are automatically re-created when you start using Trados Studio. They are user-dependent and therefore located in your Windows profile folder.

Cannot find the path in the resolution steps?

If you cannot see the files and folder paths mentioned in this article, it is likely that Windows Explorer is not configured to show hidden files and folders. Please refer to following KB article to find out how to show hidden files and folders:
