What type of license do I have and how do I Activate it?

You have purchased software with SDL Trados Studio or SDL Passolo but do not know what type of license you have or how to activate it.

Over the recent years, improved licensing systems have been introduced. As a result, this article is divided into several sections.

You can check what type of license you have in your SDL Account.

  1. Enter your user name and password and click Sign in.
  2. If you have forgotten your password, refer to KB article How to reset your password for your My SDL Account.
  3. Click Products & Plans > Licenses to display the Licenses page.

Different license types and how to activate them

  • SDL Trados Studio 2019 [type]

This is a single user license for SDL Trados Studio 2019 (license code consists of a combination of 32 digits and letters separated by 4 dashes). It can be activated from the application itself - either online: Online activation of a Single User License for SDL Trados Studio 2015 and later (recommended for most users) or offline: Offline activation and deactivation of a Single User License for SDL Trados Studio 2015 and later.

  • SDL Trados Studio 2019 [type] (Network SN)

This is a network license for SDL Trados Studio 2019 (license code consists of a combination of 32 digits and letters separated by 4 dashes). You need to activate this license on a license server (SDL License Server Manager) Online activation and deactivation of a Network License for SDL Trados Studio 2015 and later and connect the application to this license server: Connecting SDL Trados Studio 2015 to a license server.

  • SDL Trados Studio 2011/2014 [type] or SDL Passolo 2011/2015 [type]

This is a single user license (18-digit code not preceded by "N"). It can be activated from the application itself - either online: Online Activation and Deactivation of a Single User License for SDL Trados Studio 2011/2014 (recommended for most users) or offline: Offline Activation and Deactivation of a Singe User License for SDL Trados Studio 2011/2014. If a 2014 license (Passolo: 2015) has been activated on a computer, also the 2011 version can also be run based on this license.

  • SDL Trados Studio 2011/2014 [type] (Network) or SDL Passolo 2011/2015 [type] (Network)

This is a network license (18-digit code preceded by "N"). You need to activate this license on a license server (SDL Licensing Server Toolkit) Online activation and deactivation of a Network License for SDL Trados Studio 2011 and 2014 and connect the application to this license server Activating a Network License on a client machine for SDL Trados Studio 2011 or 2014. If a 2014 license (Passolo: 2015) license has been activated on the server, the 2011 version can also be connected to this server.

  • SDL Trados Studio 2014 [type] (Network SN) or SDL Passolo 2015 [type] (Network SN)

    In some instances, SDL may have provided this special network license to you (license code consists of a combination of 32 digits and letters separated by 4 dashes). This license is for SDL Trados Studio 2014 Service Pack 2 / Passolo 2015 (older versions will not work with this license) but technically works like a Studio 2015 network license. Accordingly, you need to activate this license on a license server (SDL License Server Manager) Online activation and deactivation of a Network License for SDL Trados Studio 2015 and later and connect Studio to this license server Connecting SDL Trados Studio 2015 to a license server.
  • SDL Studio GroupShare 2011/2014/2015

    This is not a license used to activate SDL Trados Studio. This is a license for SDL Studio GroupShare - a server product that enables you to collaboratively work with translation memories, termbases and projects.
