There may be a requirement to analyse or forward SDL TMS log files as part of an investigation. This article describes the process of identifying the correct log file needed for specific actions in SDL TMS and how these can be used to identify any problems. To access SDL TMS log files the user needs to have the permission to access the System level. The log files for SDL TMS are accessible from the SDL TMS User Interface ; System > Services > Logger > 'Log File Folder', it's also possible to manually locate the files from the path specified. Clicking on the Log File Folder option will display the file browser window, which will enable you to access the log files. There are three main log files generated by SDL TMS logger service; [Servername]_tms.log.xml - This is the main log file and stores all the Workflow processing, Reports information. [Servername]_archiver.log.xml - This log file stores Archiving, Terminology, TM Imports/Export information as well as other information. [Servername]_mailer.log.xml - All information related to the mails that are sent by SDL TMS are logged in this file. Checking the Plugins page in System > Services > Plugins will show which plugin is logged under which log file in SDL TMS. The majority of the actions are logged to the *_tms.log.xml file. SDL TMS will spawn new log files according to a size limit parameter, which is set at the System > Settings level. When a new log file is generated the previous log file name is appended with a date and time stamp of the last action that was written to the file, example; 2016-05-27_12-49-22_[Servername]_tms_log.xml |
Clicking on the specified log file will load this file in the web browser. It's possible to filter on various options and there is also an option to Download the log file for storage offline. Using the Previous option will load the previous log file (chronologically). It's possible to select multiple log files for download using the tick box next to the associated log files required. When SDL TMS Log files are archived (Based on Log data retention period) these are stored in zip files in the same file directory as the active files. The file name of these zipped log files is based on the year/month, for example; '2016_01_logs.zip', clicking on the zip file will initiate a download of the zip file to the local machine. |
Using the task history it's possible to identify the date and time for specific task actions that have been tracked in the log file. For all other actions the date/time will need to be recorded as to give an accurate indication of which log file will need to be checked. |
